Water Is More Than Just Water
Not all water is created equal. Water content varies greatly from our faucets, to rivers and lakes, being composed of much more than simply hydrogen and oxygen molecules. Almost all water which is retrieved from a primary source includes a variety of minerals and organisms, some which may be beneficial for its use, and some which may be detrimental. Common practice in cooling tower treatment is to use chlorine and other chemicals or treatments to attempt to prevent and limit the growth of these harmful pathogens, easing the treatment process. Water is an essential for life, and it is of utmost importance to ensure adequate water safety parameters in cooling towers to function at peak efficiency and keep residents and visitors safe. Seeing as water can vary in these properties by the hour, and can harbour dangerous pathogens and bacteria, ways to efficiently standardize cooling tower water quality at its optimal ranges adds value to any organization.
How Does Water Quality Affect Cooling Tower Treatment?
It is essential that water quality is closely controlled to comply with industry safety parameters and optimize water treatment to avoid hazardous effects, like contamination and corrosion. Optimal water quality creates favourable conditions for cooling tower operations and reduces bacteria and pathogens, which can potentially affect the end consumer. Improved water quality using Engeenuity’s technology also reduces the need for harmful chemicals, providing a safer, yet all-natural approach to water treatment. Several parameters must be maintained within ideal ranges to ensure optimal treatment, these parameters are conductivity, pH, turbidity, total suspended solids, free chlorine, and oxidation reduction potential (ORP).
What Can Engeenuity Offer Your Wastewater Treatment?
Improved Cooling Tower Maintenance
By applying Engeenuity’s technology in cooling towers, we enhanced the performance of the oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocides in the system, reducing microbiological levels yet increasing free chlorine residuals after treatment. The conclusions of the Facility Manager at Chevron who ran the tests, mentioned that “the amount of chlorine being added in conjunction with the use of Engeenuity technology could be reduced. This would also result in a decrease in the copper corrosion which increased significantly when the chlorine was slugged to the system. The Engeenuity technology can reduce the amount of chlorine required and result in lower copper corrosion and longer chiller life.” In a separate cooling tower test, 50 litres of well water were inoculated with 50mls of aerobic bacteria waste. We compared the effects of Engeenuity, without chlorine, to 0.5ppm free chlorine used in the control sample. The observations were that the control well water used for testing had a pH of 7.6 compared to 8.2 after Engeenuity treatment. The chlorine levels in the pilot cooling towers following the testing of our Biophoton-x™ treatment was zero ppm, while improving microbiological control, outperforming chlorine.
Environmental Control/ Bacteria & Pathogen Reduction
By introducing our bacteriostatic mechanism of action in the water, we were able to prove our capacity to reduce the presence of bacteria and pathogen in wastewater treatment. By applying our Bacteriostatic Mechanism of Action, we can inhibit the reproduction of bacteria in any environment, especially water. By applying our technology in your processes, not only can you control the parameters of the water which enters your process, but also control the water discharge quality. In river water, we decreased the growth rate and total count of microbial contamination in organic systems or in water by >90%, in five consecutive tests, which, in conclusion, helps to use considerably less amount of chemicals to achieve the desired results.
Reduced Chemicals in Cooling Tower Treatment
One of the main water parameters which Engeenuity can modify is surface tension. By reducing surface tension in water, we are able to weaken the water’s molecular bonds, allowing more efficient unions between chemical and water molecules, which also causes for the water to more readily soak into pores and organisms. On several tests run in a chemical production plant in Panama, we were able to reduce by >50% the amount of active ingredients in Cleaner, Glass Cleaner, and Degreaser/Hard Surface Cleaner, yet provided improved cleaning capacity compared to the original mixtures. This effect has also been replicated in water used for human consumption, in the Panama Canal’s Miraflores Water Treatment Plant, where we reduced coliform bacteria by >90% and a decrease in total bacteria by upwards of 60%, without using chemicals. Engeenuity’ s technology required lower costs by eliminating chlorine and other chemicals used in treating process water and chemicals used in the product mixtures. It was also mentioned that one of the 4 quantifiable objectives of improvements caused by Engeenuity´s technology was minimizing the use of chlorine and other chemicals used in their processes, which reduced costs and improved workers´ health.
